From Homeless, to Homeowner- Nicole’s Story
These powerful words were spoken by Nicole, a woman who, over a decade ago, found herself and her two children in UMOM, a shelter for families experiencing homelessness. Nicole was recovering from injuries from an abusive relationship and had a 6-year-old daughter, Natalia, and a 15-year-old son to take care of.
“It was hard because I had to keep them in school. I had to make sure that they got to school and that they didn't look like they were homeless,” Nicole recalled. Despite the hardships, she found the strength within herself to ensure the safety and well-being of her children. It was in this challenging phase of her life, as she stepped into a homeless shelter, that she realized the importance of a place like UMOM.
Nicole has come a long way since then. She is now a homeowner, financially secure, and thriving in a job she is passionate about. In addition, she has taken on a mentorship role and volunteers to support men in recovery. Natalia, following her mother's footsteps, also has a heart for outreach and service. She says, “I'm 16 in high school, taking college courses. And I'm building houses for the homeless with West-MEC.”
Reflecting on her journey, Nicole remembers how UMOM provided her family with a safe place to sleep, regular meals, and a support system that truly cared about their success.
“We didn't miss a meal, and that was a blessing. We made friends here. I would say the staff are more than cheerleaders. They're all rooting for us. They just wanted us to succeed, and they were there in case things got overwhelming.”
