How a Mother & Daughter Found Healing: Mallory & Carrie’s Story

Mallory and her mother, Carrie, had been through a lot. Mallory was a victim of domestic abuse, while Carrie was mixed up in an unsafe drug situation. Mallory was able to flee her abusive situation and rescue her mom, but struggled to find a safe, stable home for the two of them. Despite searching for weeks and calling everywhere she could think of, Mallory found that nearly every shelter available had unsafe conditions. Without a stable place to stay, Mallory would have to quit her job.

AFTER FINDING UMOM, MALLORY AND CARRIE TURN THINGS AROUND

Then, Mallory got connected with UMOM, and she and her mother were given a safe place to stay in their own private unit the very next day. With stable housing, Mallory was able to keep her job and her independence, and having shelter taken care of allowed her and her mother to focus on healing. “It let me dig out of the hole I was in,” Mallory says.

Not only were Mallory and her mother able to stay in the same room and care for one another, but Mallory found an even larger support system among the other women at UMOM.

“To have a support system, it meant the world to me. I didn’t have to worry about rent, how I was going to wash my clothes.”

THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS, THIS MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FIND HOME

Through the Rapid Rehousing program, Mallory and her mother have now moved into a new apartment.

“The Rapid Rehousing program was really great to me. They gave me furniture because I had to leave all my stuff when I fled my domestic violence. They helped me with my rent, my bills so I could stock up on food, and save up for a car.”

With her new car, Mallory is able to take her mom to her favorite activities, including church, Bible studies, and the zoo. Mallory says helping her mom stay active, rather than cooped up, helps her stay drug free.

“When you go through hard things, it’s easy to fall back on hard decisions,” Mallory says. However, having their own place and a stable life has helped both Mallory and Carrie stay on the right track and continue to heal from their past.

WHAT MALLORY WANTS US ALL TO KNOW

Nowadays, Mallory is using her voice to spread awareness about domestic violence.

“I want to help anyone and everyone to become better and feel wholly healed.”

Above all, Mallory wants everyone to know they are not alone. “You are not what you go through, and you are not alone,” she says.

“Abuse comes in all shapes, forms, and fashions,” she continues. “Sharing your story will help someone else. People may be afraid to share their story and by sharing your story, they may feel empowered to share their story.”

“There is always someone who is going through it too. You are not the only one.”
