UMOM New Day Centers received a generous donation from Thrive Causemetics of over 27,000 makeup products, ranging from eyeliner and mascara to blush and lip gloss. Thrive Causemetics is Beauty with a Purpose, and for every product purchased, they donate to help a woman thrive. Makeup is often considered a luxury item rather than a necessity, but for most women, it is an instrumental tool utilized in everyday life.

Thrive Causemetics was started by Karissa Bodnar in 2015. The inspiration came from her dear friend, Kristy, who passed away from cancer at only 24-years-old. Karissa’s passion for quality and equality sparked an idea to create a high-end cosmetics line to reflect the qualities she saw in her friend. Karissa wanted all women to feel empowered through their appearance regardless of what they were experiencing in their lives so that they could truly thrive.

Thrive Causemetics has a “buy-one, give-back, responsive giving” mantra which has allowed them to donate over $25 million in products to over 50 partnering organizations. These groups support women who are fighting cancer, surviving domestic abuse, emerging from homelessness, or re-entering the workforce. Their website states “responsive giving means that we listen to nonprofits and contribute in ways that best address their needs. This allows us to support a wide range of partners in a way that will help them the most.” Thrive Causemetics are universal and are created for all women. 100% cruelty-free formulas, vegan ingredients, and developed without parabens or sulfates, Thrive is truly creating a culture of care in our communities.

UMOM New Day Centers is excited to announce that more than 500 women will be joining the #ThriveTribe’s group of empowered women, thanks to this donation. Ten unique Thrive products were put together to create individual makeup kits with the help of volunteers from State Farm – Marina Link. Volunteers recognized the signature Thrive teal packaging and gushed about each product; they loved Thrive makeup themselves.  Makeup bags were distributed to women at the Diane and Bruce Halle Women’s Center, UMOM’s emergency shelter program for single women, and at the New Day Center, UMOM’s emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness. After the event, one volunteer stopped to share, saying “I always see advertisements on social media for Thrive Causemetics, and now that I know UMOM is one of the nonprofits they donate to, I’m definitely going to be buying their products!”

There are currently 130 single women residing at the Halle Women’s Center. These women are like many you might know yourself; however, many have endured life-changing situations such as eviction, domestic violence, unemployment, a lack of family assistance, and other barriers that caused them to experience homelessness. Shelby*, a 34-year-old resident at Halle is currently interviewing for new work positions.

“Being able to dress up and wear this makeup will really help me feel beautiful and confident during my interviews,” she shared.

UMOM provides families, single women, and unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness with shelter, services, and basic needs such as food, healthcare, and workforce development training. Individuals receive essential items such as shampoo, body soap, clothing, socks and shoes, diapers, cleaning supplies, and more at UMOM. However, new makeup is an uncommon donation since it is not seen as a necessity.

Each woman’s face lit up as she heard that she was receiving her own makeup kit with ten Thrive products as a donated gift.

“Makeup is so important to some of these women. They can creatively express themselves; they can feel more confident and more radiant when wearing it. They’ve always been able to work toward ending their homelessness, but thanks to Thrive, they’ll look and feel like they can too!” said Halle Operations Coordinator, Norma Martinez. “Makeup allows these women to feel like they’re on the same level playing field as everyone else.”

Thrive Causemetics will allow UMOM residents to feel more confident and more comfortable rejoining the greater community without the added barrier of worrying how they’re viewed based on their past.

Thank you, Thrive Causemetics, for creating a unique and uplifting experience for the women of UMOM. In joining us in our efforts to end homelessness in Arizona, you’ve been able to impact the lives of incredible individuals. There is still work to be done, though. On any given night, there is an average of 150 families waiting for shelter in Maricopa County alone. In 2018, UMOM was able to serve 8,700 individuals, 77% of whom were placed into stable or supportive housing. We cannot accomplish these things without your support. If you, or someone you know, are interested in donating in-kind donations to UMOM, please visit our website at https://umom.org/in-kind-donations/. Thank you!
