Reflections on the Past 12 Months

Dear Friends,

Recently, I celebrated my 1st anniversary at UMOM.

It’s been a whirlwind of a year. With UMOM navigating the ever-changing landscape of a global pandemic, our dedicated staff has never wavered, continuing to work hard to provide emergency shelter and comprehensive services to families and single women experiencing homelessness in the Valley.

And the support we’ve received from you, our donors, has been second to none. I don’t think I have ever been so pleased to meet with donors of any organization I have worked with as I have been to meet you through our Behind-the-Scenes virtual meetings, the online mission tours, or over a cup of coffee.

UMOM is fortunate to have our community’s most passionate advocates, committed donors, and national and local corporations that power the work we do. I look forward to the day we can finally have more opportunities to meet together, where I can hear from and thank you in person.

Thank you for all you do to support UMOM. Together, we are one day closer to ending homelessness in the Valley.

Your Support Drives UMOM’s Clients’ Success

Meet Jovian

With rents and the cost of childcare rising, single dad Jovian hoped to save money for a place of his own and his toddler son, Josiah, by staying temporarily with his mother. But conflicts between Jovian and other adults in the home made living in the same apartment difficult. He moved out, and with nowhere else to go, made money doing food deliveries while Josiah made shopping trips with him. To entertain his son, Jovian took him to the park during breaks and at night, they slept in the car. Knowing this was not something he could do long-term, Jovian called UMOM for help.

Once they moved into the family emergency shelter, Jovian was able to breathe a sigh of relief. They now had a room where he and Josiah had space to move around. Jovian was able to focus on looking for a job that paid better, and work with UMOM’s housing specialists to find a home he could afford.

Jovian is now working at a landscaping company, and with UMOM’s help, applied for assistance for childcare for Josiah. Jovian is grateful UMOM was there for him and Josiah, and looks forward to moving into a new apartment in the next few weeks.

It’s Our Annual Holiday Stocking and Gift Card Drive!
Help us give joy this holiday season to families experiencing homelessness.

holiday stocking

UMOM is gearing up for the holidays and we are collecting stockings to provide some cheer to our families. We are collecting stockings for kids, men and women. You can find out more details by signing up here.

The nights are now getting chilly and before you know it, temperatures will really start to get cold as we approach December.

UMOM is in need of donations of coats and jackets in all sizes for women, men and children so we can provide UMOM families with cold-weather outerwear. We also accept cash donations that will enable us to purchase coats for families in need.

Drop off coats and other outerwear at UMOM New Day Centers,  3333 E. Van Buren, Phoenix, Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Bethany Crossing Opens in Glendale

Residents are now living at Bethany Crossing in Glendale, UMOM’s newest affordable housing

Bethany Crossing began opening in phases early this summer. Located at 69th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, it has everything tenants could want: affordable rent and modern amenities, such as in-unit laundry, granite countertops, easy to care for wood-look flooring and contemporary kitchen cabinets.

Additionally, tenants can entertain outside with access to barbecue grills, picnic tables and a playground area for kids. Bethany Crossing’s residents can also keep fit with the complex’s fitness room or socialize in the clubhouse, complete with a coffee bar set up and seating areas.

These photos show Bethany Crossing over the past 14 months, from dirt lot and groundbreaking to completion of community spaces and finished spacious apartments. In all, there are 40 two-bedroom units (just under 1,000 square feet) and 32 three-bedroom apartments (1,200 square feet) that house larger families. Bethany Crossing broke ground in the summer of 2020 and now houses 72 families.

Coming Soon…

Construction started on Newsom Village in December 2020, located on 9th Street north of Broadway in Phoenix. Newsom Village will have 60 units, a combination of two- and three-bedroom apartments with the same modern amenities as Bethany Crossing. New residents are scheduled to begin moving in early in 2022. And…

UMOM will break ground on yet another project very soon, 9 South, located in south Phoenix. We will have more details to share with you in our next newsletter!

We know you have choices when it comes to supporting nonprofit missions you believe in. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for choosing UMOM and invite you to contribute to our organization on this year’s global day of generosity, Giving Tuesday, on November 30, 2021.

Every dollar you donate transforms lives and lifts people in our community out of homelessness, helping them build a life of stability. Thank you!

Thanks to our generous supporters, UMOM’s annual signature fundraising event, Buckles and Bangles, was a huge success! Our amazing corporate sponsors, community members who were able to enjoy an evening under the stars with us, and those who were unable to be there but contributed or bid on auction items made the event everything we always hoped it will be.

We look forward to seeing all of you again next year and welcoming new friends to this Western-themed soiree in 2022! Check out the videos from the event here.
