19West is a new apartment development in north Phoenix that will provide 54 families with brand new, safe housing they can afford. The project is the brainchild of UMOM New Day Centers, in partnership with the City of Phoenix.
Where is it?
The development will go in on Morten Avenue, near 19th Avenue – which means it’s close to light rail and bus stops, as well as good schools, grocery stores, churches and jobs. Families who live at 19West will be able access a variety of amenities and UMOM services that include:
- Community room
- Picnic area with tables
- Exercise room
- Play ground
- Plenty of parking
- On-site recreational and after-school programs for kids
- GED tutoring
- Wellness programs
What is the impact?
19West also has the potential for solid economic impact on the neighborhood. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, new affordable housing brings millions of dollars in new income to the area, along with new tax revenue for local governments and it creates dozens of local jobs.
Phoenix Councilman Danny Valenzuela represents the neighborhood that surrounds the 19West site. He said, “For most of us, the cost of housing is our largest expense, and it can quickly become unsustainable if someone in the family loses a job or an unanticipated expense arises. Partners like UMOM are vital for developing socially just public policy that assures the most vulnerable, frail and homeless populations, and low-income families have affordable and decent homes.”
Groundbreaking will happen in late 2017 or early 2018.
How can I help?
The best thing you can do is to support UMOM. We’d love to have you as a donor or a volunteer. Even no-longer-needed household goods support the families, single women, veterans and youth we serve.
