Appreciating You and UMOM’s Employees

Dear Friends,

March is a month of many celebrations, not the least of which is Employee Appreciation Day. You may recall that I talk about UMOM’s staff often, and I want to take this moment to do that yet again.

UMOM serves thousands of people each year: moms, dads, kids and single women. They meet one-on-one with case managers who care, listen and craft strategies and align services tailored to each member of the family – all to help them find good jobs and a permanent place to live. The workforce development team helps with every phase of a job search, including teaching adults how to write resumes, apply for jobs and interview. The shelter staff – those who handle the front desk, prepare the meals, handle maintenance and help clients with everyday needs and campus safety, as well as those who work in administration – all are important to keeping the shelters open and operating.

Because of our dedicated staff at UMOM and the support of people in the community like you, UMOM is the largest family emergency shelter in Arizona. I’m proud of UMOM’s employees and thankful for your partnership.

UMOM Success Stories

Meet Trisa and Sara

Trisa and her family came to UMOM shortly before winter, after months of staying with friends and in cheap motel rooms that eventually got too expensive. Determined to take advantage of UMOM’s housing and employment services, she focused on finding an apartment and a full-time job. It wasn’t long after Trisa’s family moved into the shelter that she started working and got housing, and with the help of the job development team, her 19-year-old daughter found a full-time position as well. Months later, the family is doing well and Trisa is relieved and grateful to be back on the path to stability.

Sara had struggled for years with addiction. But she knew it was now time to get clean, which meant she had to stay away from family members who were still using drugs. She lost her home, and after a brief time on the streets, found her way to UMOM’s Halle Women’s Center. While she was nervous about setting off in a different direction, she worked with UMOM’s job development experts and housing managers and was able to find a full-time position at a bakery. She worked hard and saved enough money to cover the deposit and move-in costs for an affordable studio apartment. It was the first time in years that she had lived alone, but after a few months, she became accustomed to and happy about her new life.

Celebrating Black History Month

Staff and clients were treated to a full slate of activities and displays on campus throughout the month of February, celebrating Black History Month. Children at the Boys and Girls Club were treated to a movie theater-style showing of the film “Soul”, read books written by Black authors, participated in a variety of art projects and attended other events at the club. Artwork adorned the windows of the lobby and displays highlighted significant events over the past 150 years.

CVS Offers Health Care Screenings to Tenants at UMOM Affordable Housing Communities

UMOM partner CVS is doing a round of screenings at UMOM’s affordable housing communities through next month as part of its Health Zones Initiative, encouraging local residents to become proactive about their health.

The screenings offer blood pressure checks, as well as analyses of blood sugar and cholesterol, all of which can detect health issues that can potentially be life-threatening, such as diabetes or hypertension.

Sign Up for “Behind the Scenes”

We hope you’ve had an opportunity to join one of the “Behind the Scenes” meetings recently to hear a discussion about some of the programs we offer at UMOM for adults and kids.

This month, Artwan Green, director of UMOM’s on-site Boys and Girls Club, will talk about programs the club offers to help kids at the shelter stay entertained, get help with homework and take workshops on boosting their self-esteem and learning life skills. Homelessness can be hard on school-age children and UMOM’s Boys and Girls Club provides a positive and enriching diversion for them.

The next “Behind the Scenes” takes place this Thursday, March 3rd at 12:00 noon.

As always, these events are free, but you’ll need to RSVP to attend. Sign up by clicking here.
